This is just a great original painting. This is one of those paintings that I was thinking about keeping or perhaps offering at a live auction. The work is so superior. I think at some point I will probably send it to a good auction so that people can see the greatness of this genre painting. First off, it is not signed anywhere that I can find. It looks incredibly like the work of william penn morgan (1826-1900). I do know the artist didnt sign all of his work, but because I have no way of confirming this, I am only selling this in the style or of the school of morgan. Regardless of who the artist is, the work is as good if not better than many of the morgan's I have seen. Oil on canvas measuring 16 x 13 inches. Incredible scene of a young girl picking the petals off the flower in a "he loves me he loves me not" way. You can see the loose petals sitting on her lap. Her face, hands and feet are done with such incredible detail. The red bonnet that is on her head even has great detail. If you look at morgan's work, many of the girls are wearing a similar red bonnet or hat like the one she is wearing. She is sitting on some sort of basket with an incredible landscape in the background. I love the clearing in the field that shows the sky in the center left. There is one 1/4 inch tear at the base of the clearing that I have not touched because I didnt even notice it until I was taking photos of the painting. Other than that, some minor crackling to the canvas but otherwise, this is really about as good as you are going to find. Truly a stunning work. Comes in what I believe is the original period gold frame. Fits it perfectly. Does show some minor gold loss in spots but otherwise makes a great presentation of this stunning original 19th century american work. Frame measures 22 x 19 inches. Pictures are taken in natural sunlight.
