As an artist, Schlief was self-taught. He trained as a surveying technician at the Soest Building Trades School and worked in this profession until 1959. from 1907-09, he had contact with Christian Rohlfs and Wilhelm Morgner, through whom Schlief was introduced to art. He began participating in exhibitions around 1920.
