Prideaux John Selby’s Illustrations of British Ornithology was originally published in Edinburgh between 1821 and 1834 and included 222 large-format engravings, all engraved by Selby himself—an unusual distinction among major natural history works of the period. In the early 20th century, noted antique print collector Paul Victorius of Charlottesville, Virginia acquired a number of Selby’s original copper plates in Europe and produced a limited series of restrikes, which were then beautifully hand-colored. This engraving originates from that important restrike collection. Printed on heavy paper and presented in excellent condition, with bright, well-preserved hand coloring. A striking example from one of the great ornithological publications of the 19th century.
