Chairish

$3,150

19th Century Indian Company School Watercolor Painting. The Kangra School originated in the Kanga Valley of Himachal Pradesh, India and is renowned for it's delicate and detailed style, as well as portraits of royal figures. The 19th century was a period of cross-cultural exchange due to British colonialism in India and other parts of Asia. Paintings were commissioned by royalty and became popular with European collectors during the British colonial period. This is a rare portrait of a Burmese Prince flanked by two Indian attendants, standing in a landscape setting. They are dressed in traditional regalia. Rich colors of blue, green, cream, and brown throughout. Under this scene is writing in ink that states, "An Original Indian Sketch, Capetown-C. Good Hope". Painting is framed and matted.
