Jacobus Lambertus Dispo Sr., (Untitled) A Clear, Bright Day In Holland

Chairish

$1,250

This painting is optimism, itself, especially when you consider it was likely painted during the harsh decade following the end of World War II. The aftermath of the horror—you may remember something of young Anne Frank’s diary—typically meant no heat, little food, decades-old clothing and little else except the relief of peace at last, and determination to rebuild. Dutch artist Jacobus Lambertus Dispo Sr. (1890-1964), a specialist in landscapes and street scenes, deployed bright, clear colors in this painting, which express the remarkable optimism of the time. What better as a backdrop for the four hearty survivors here, out and about, keeping their spirits up after turbulent times.
