Hand-painted japanese landscape panel on paper, signed with the characters 周永, dating to the shōwa period, 1950s. dimensions: h 46 cm, w 136 cm, d 1.5 cm. executed in sumi-e (black ink on paper) with beautiful washes that suggest mist, depth and water. A river flows between rocky banks; on either side dense vegetation, and in the center a narrow wooden bridge crossed by a walker with a staff—a classic japanese motif of travel and quietude. In the distance, trees and hills fade into haze, giving the panorama its characteristic japanese depth. mounted on a gold-yellow textile ground with a subtle floral pattern and finished with a wooden frame. ideal above a sideboard, sofa or in a hallway as an oriental accent. condition: good and decorative vintage condition with honest age traces—overall toning, a few small spots and foxing, and slight discoloration along the top edge; the back shows older water marks on the backing board that are not disturbing from the front (see photos).
