Gaia Diptych #44 by Jaume Llorens Bach is a 18cm x 24cm Black and White print on Premio Kozo gsm White Paper by Awagami Factory. Edition of 10 + 2 Artist Proofs. In Gaia 44, Llorens Bach contrasts the light and dark of the forest of trees that find themselves in Catalonia. Llorens Bach uses absolutely no artificial light to render the trees so highly expressive, instead relying on the natural sunlight and moonlight to highlight the contrast. Placing the light above the dark is a deliberate decision by Llorens Bach, and one which enables him to draw a link between the earth and the sky. The slender trunks and branches of the trees start to merge into one another, marrying the earth to the sky with a singular gesture. The series Gaia takes its names from the hypothesis by James Lovelock and Lynn Margulis, which describes Earth as a single superorganism in which living beings and the rest of the planet establish a self-regulating equilibrium that ensures the survival of the whole. In this series of diptychs, Llorens creates a duality of meaning by juxtaposing two photographs of natural elements found in Llorens' own natural habitat. These two individual images combine to make a third, holistic, harmonious whole, which differs from the simple sum of its parts, as described by Ralph Gibson in 'Overtones and Proportions'. 'Gaia' was recently voted into the Top 10 of LensCulture's prestigious Critic's Choice Awards 2023. Signed by Maker,Numbered
