Plate after François Boucher (1703-1770) illustrating the collection of geographical maps "Oriental Neptune" (1745-1775) by Jean-Baptiste-Nicolas-Denis d'après de Mannevillette, born in 1707 in Havre-de-Grâce and died in 1780. French hydrographer, he became captain of the Compagnie des Indes and mapped the coasts of India and of China to produce this collection. These illustrations are taken from Virgil's Aeneid, Canto 1, verse 135: "Quos ego\. sed motos praestat componere fluctus" which can be translated as "I will\.! But it is better to calm the agitation of the waves." Very beautiful paper, intense and deep blacks, this 18th century vintage print has some restorations but remains of good quality. Beautiful windings typical of the Louis XV-Louis XVI era, Neptune and lively and animated characters, sea, skies and clouds of sumptuous realism. Fleurdelysé coat of arms and putti adding a very classic touch to the whole. This print will delight all marine and antique nautical lovers.
