Jean Dubuffet (Le Havre 1901 - Paris 1985) Best known as the founder of the contemporary art movement called Art Brut and for his collection of works—Collection de l'art brut—that this movement spawned. Jean Dubuffet enjoyed a prolific art career, both in France and in America, he delved deep into questions of ground and materiality. The surfaces of his canvases are always thick and clotted with muddy and scatological aesthetics. His own paintings are purposefully “deskilled,” often possessing the spontaneity and crude aesthetics of finger paintings. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
