Jean-Michel Basquiat, Museum Security (Broadway Meltdown) 1983/2021 Monte Carlo 300gsm watercolour paper. This premium paper made on a traditional cylinder mould machine by St Cuthbert's Mill in Somerset where they have been making fine papers on the same site since the 1700's. They are the only commercial paper mill in England to still use this paper-making process. 90 x 90cm ‘Museum Security' is part of a series of visually rich canvases that Jean-Michel Basquiat produced in 1983. The canvas has been filled with an abundance of images and phrases which represent music, popular culture, history and anatomy- subjects most often found in Basquiat's body of work. The rendered vocabulary and painterly drips also create a sense of urgency and intimacy which may reflect Basquiat's sudden rise to fame as his art had started to be displayed in art galleries around the world.
