This is a great set of four of antique Victorian satirical mounted and framed John Leech hunting and sports illustrations ready to be hung. The mounting is a good quality the colour of moss green and appears to be silk, or a similar woven fabric and set very well against the brushed gold wooden frame with rounded corners. Note that different monitors display slightly different colour tones. The first illustration is: Mr Jorrocks enters into Handley from Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour by Robert Smith Surtees. The second: Mind the Bull from Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour by Robert Smith Surtees. The third: Mr Jorrocks starting for "The cut me down Countries" from Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour by Robert Smith Surtees. The fourth: Mr Jorrocks has a Bye Day from Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour by Robert Smith Surtees. Bio: John Leech (1817–1864) was a British caricaturist and illustrator. He was best known for his work for Punch, a humorous magazine for a broad middle-class audience. Leech also enjoys fame as the first illustrator of Charles Dickens' 1843 novella A Christmas Carol. He was furthermore a pioneer in comics, creating the recurring character Mr. Jorrocks and some sequential illustrated gags. In the 1850s come the numerous etchings of sporting scenes, contributed, together with woodcuts, to the Handley Cross novels by Robert Smith Surtees.
