More information coming soon… This vivacious lithograph is after a painting completed in 1673 by the famed court painter of King Louis XIV, Charles Le Brun. The lithograph, which dates to the late 1700s, was engraved by Benoît Audran (the Elder) and depicts the final stand of the Indian king, Porus, who is the central figure with a spear raised on the war elephant. The Battle of the Hydaspes, which occurred in May of 326 BC, would be the final campaign in Alexander the Great’s foray into India. Alexander was so impressed by the valor of Porus (as mentioned in the text beneath the lithograph) that he allowed him to continue to rule the dominion as a satrap.
