Late 19th Century Antique Berlin Woolwork Needlework

Chairish

$1,195

19th-Century Victorian woolwork embroideries featuring a child and pets of an idealized country life. Dates to about 1870, and is a view of the rear of a large country home occupying most of the canvas with a playful dog and a cat perched on a huge barrel that has a textile casually thrown over it. A young lady in the background holds a large blue jug. The entire piece is worked in long rows of counted cross stitch. The stitching is even and was done by an accomplished needleworker. There are flowering trees before the house that add much to the wonderful details in this piece. The windows were done to represent leaded glass with small panels and the door is open to reveal a darkened room. This charming needlework is housed in a cushion-shaped rosewood frame of about the same age. The frame’s rich, dark color and striking wood grain adds a pleasing decorative effect. The colors are vibrant and lovely. It retains the heavy original glass that has protected the textile over the years.
