$2,395

An original antique panoramic watercolor painting on paper by John C. Syer, British artist circa 1846-1913, "View of the River Esk at Whitby (North Yorkshire, England) from the Old Bridge", scene looking down onto the river and town, village roof tops in the foreground, sailing vessels in the river to the left, more vessels in the river and tied up in front of the village to the right, on the left bank are other buildings and houses, an arched bridge connects the two sides of the village, beyond the buildings is farm land and rolling hills down to the North Sea, 20 1/2" x 29", signed J. Syer in the lower right corner front. CA number 3981, CA purchased from a regional British auction house late summer of 2025. This painting probably originates from the late 19th century or very early 20th century. The work has been lightly cleaned and reframed using Museum Glass, museum backing 3/4" white linen liner and 1 1/2" Abe Munn antiqued gold Louis 16th reproduction moulding. John C. Syer was the son of John Syer, artist. He served in the British Navy until 1870 and settled in Whitby. He exhibited marine works in Bristol and York and was a friend to the artist B.W. Leader. The aspect of this work is as if one were located on a hill above the village, looking out a window and surveying a vast landscape.
