Artist: Maryanne Meltzer (American, 1922-2014) Title: Water Droplet Medium: Monotype Etching with Embossing, signed in pencil lower right Size: 30.25 inches x 22.75 inches inches Image Size: 22.5 x 16.5 inches Artist Bio: Maryanne Meltzer was an artist and educator who lived and worked in Dallas, Texas. Her legacy began when she started teaching art for DISD and what is now Dallas College North Lake Campus. Her work was typically centered around concepts of alienation and strangers. Usually consisting of subjects that give little about themselves, what she depicts are more shadows or apparitions than they are people, but this gives the viewer something to contemplate; is this what it feels like to move through the world without connection? Meltzer earned her BFA at Texas Women’s University, then studied at SMU for a short time and later attended The University of Texas, Dallas where she received her MFA at 69 years old. Her work has been exhibited at The Dallas Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, and in galleries all over the country. Maryanne Meltzer was not only an accomplished artist and educator, but she was also an advocate for women in the arts. She served as president of the Dallas Women’s Caucus for Art, a member of The Board of Directors for the National Women’s Caucus for Art, Regional Vice President of the Coalition of Women’s Art Organizations/Dallas Art District Friends, and she was a founding member of the National Museum of Women in the Arts. We are so fortunate to have multiple wonderful pieces by Maryanne Meltzer in our collection at our North Lake and El Centro Campuses as reminder of her service to the arts in Dallas but also to Dallas College.
