Plate size: 18"x22" Framed dimensions: 28.25" x 32.75" Claude Gaveau was born in France on December 5, 1940. As a child, he painted with his uncle, and his interested in painting has since never ceased. He studied for five years at the School of Applied Arts in Paris, specializing in painting: murals, fresco, and canvases; mosaic works, stained glass, and tapestry weaving. Thereafter, Gaveau continued his formal training in art by attending the National Superior School of Les Beaux Arts in Paris. Gaveau was greatly inspired by the French painters Cezanne, Braque, Duffy, and Leger. His own work was recognized in 1963, when he was awarded a prize and scholarship from the Antwerp Academy, enabling him to study Flemish painting in Brussels. In 1965, Gaveau had his first one-man exhibition in Paris at the Angle Aigu Gallery. Three years later, Gaveau was nominated for the Critics Prize, sponsored by the Saint Placide Gallery, Paris, in 1968. La Belle Gabrielle Gallery, Paris, held a solo show of Claude Gaveau’s work in 1971. His work was discovered more broadly and began to travel internationally to expand his subject matter and created a more variety in his compositions. His travels included America, Italy, and Morocco. His palette is most typically bright, and often his compositions are slightly abstracted, familiar forms (nudes, still lives, etc.) and captivate ones imagination.
