While the artist is often associated with her feminine forms, giant spider sculptures, "cell" installations, and other three-dimensional works, Bourgeois's expansive, idiosyncratic practice also embraced painting, fiber art, printmaking, and books. Her omnivorous approach to media and contorted explorations of bodily experience incorporated feminist themes and aspects of Abstract Expressionism and Surrealism, though Bourgeois was never formally affiliated with any particular movement. Her work has been exhibited at institutions including Tate Modern, the Museum of Modern Art, the Centre Pompidou, the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, among many others.
