Lowell Blair Nesbitt (1933-1993) A moody depiction of a building entrance blocked by ladders, fences, pallets, and boxes. Screenprint; Edition of 3000 Size 14" x 18" This picture was one of twelve commissioned by Licht Editions to create a 1972 calendar. Works were contributed by Richard Anuszkiewicz, Mel Ramos, Red Grooms, Bob Stanley, Charles Hinman, John Wesley, Henry Pearson, Josef Levi, Paul Van Hoeydonck, Pierre Clark, and David Milne. A painter and printmaker best known for his vivid and unique depictions of flowers, Lowell Nesbitt created floral works characterized by their monumental scale and vivid realism. The artist started his career creating abstract works but began to depict specific subjects such as shoes, dogs, empty studios, building facades, and interiors in the early 1960s at the suggestion of Robert Indiana as seen in Canvas in Studio I & II (1967) and New Shoes (1975). Although his style was often described as photorealistic, Nesbitt himself objected to the term; rather, his work is more loosely painted and ambiguous than it generally implies. In 1980, the United States Postal Service honored Nesbitt by issuing four stamps based on his floral paintings.
