Simbisa means "to strengthen" and "to empower" in the African Shona language. It is also the name that Ghana's Ayoma Alhassan selected for this exceptional relief panel carved by hand in mahogany and decorated with faces he accentuates with a mixture of charcoal and glue and then paints by hand. This unique wall art is a tribute to the traditional Dogon boards of Mali that were used to adorn the entrances of homes, embellishing them with intricate depictions of human and animal figures to ward off evil spirits and safeguard the household.
