Marc Chagall Limited Edition Stone Lithograph. La Dance pour le Watergate Theater de Londres. 1950. Size : 27 x 38 cm. Frame Size: 17 x 21 in. Sur les presses de Mourlot, 1951. Of a Limited Edition. Limited Edition. Artwork comes with Gallery Prepared Documentation, which includes Authentication Certificate COA and Provenance. "Chagall pays homage to music and the performing arts. It was originally intended to adorn the foyer of the Watergate Theatre in London. In this work, a green female figure can be seen holding a bouquet stretched out to a red allegorical figure, who has a goat's head, wears a clown costume, and plays the violin. The use of complementary colors (red and green, yellow and purple) gives rhythm to the composition, like a musical score. Chagall depicts himself in front of his easel, a palette in one hand and holding a purple rooster, showing the movement of his body with wavy lines, as if animated by the sound of the instrument. His attachment to music and dance has its origins in Hasidic culture and rites, which facilitate communion with the divine and are probably represented by the circle of dancers at the bottom of the composition..."
