Markus Prachensky was born the son of the architect and painter Wilhelm Nicolaus Prachensky. His mother, Henriette Hnidy, came from a family of officers in the Austro-Hungarian Army. His cousin was the Innsbruck architect Hubert Prachensky. After graduating from high school, he moved to Vienna in 1952 and began studying architecture at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (graduating with a diploma). from 1953, he also studied painting there. In 1956, Prachensky, together with Wolfgang Hollegha, Josef Mikl, and Arnulf Rainer, founded the artists' group "Galerie nächst St. Stephan" (Gallery next to St. Stephen's Cathedral), which gathered around the Viennese priest Otto Mauer, the cathedral preacher at St. Stephen's. In 1957, the group was presented in a major exhibition at the Vienna Secession, and Prachensky became a member. from 1983 until his retirement in 2000, he held a professorship at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and was head of the master class for painting. Prachensky is considered one of the most important representatives of the Austrian avant-garde and Art Informel in Austria.
