Born in Sweden, Sir William Chambers (1723 - 1796) was an 18th century British architect, his time with the Swedish East India Company taking him to China, where he studied architecture and decoration. After a spell in Paris and Italy, his return to Britain in 1755 saw the opening of an architecture practice in London. Treatise on Civil Architecture (1759) was an influential title, with information and renditions of the classical orders.
