Jean Target was born in France in 1910 and primarily known for his depictions of flamenco dancers through painting and sculpture. From a very young age, he was passionately drawn to two forms of art that would remain the focal points of his career: visual arts and performing arts. In the 1930s and 1940s, as a young man, Jean Target frequented Parisian theaters and cabarets, much like his role model, the famous Impressionist painter Toulouse-Lautrec, had done at the end of the 19th century. Jean became friends with many performers and captured numerous formal and candid depictions of them. He gained exclusive access to the behind-the-scenes world of Parisian cabaret, using this privilege to create art with an unparalleled perspective as an insider to the seedy, dark, yet glamorous underworld of the Parisian nightlife. Target drew the dancers on-site, capturing their movements in his immediately recognizable signature style. In the 1940s and 1950s, he continued his artistic career, gaining recognition among collectors in France and throughout Europe. From 1932-1960 Target was the official artist and sculptor for the The Opera Garnier in Paris. His work depicting the Parisian performing arts scene captures the essence and history of the theater and the golden age of cabaret in Paris. Jean Target continued to draw, paint, and sculpt until his death in 1997. His works are held in collections and museums worldwide, including the renowned Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
