Mid-Century Abstract Figural Collage, After Jean Varda, 1960s

Chairish

$3,400

Original painting and collage on canvas. Riveting midcentury modern piece signed by "F Train": Compositionally and aesthetically, this is a masterpiece. I found it in a San Diego antique shop. A group of figures whiling away the day at the fish market, signed lower right, "F Train" Dimensions: 30" wide x 1" deep x 24" high (inches) Background on genre: After Varda who studied art at L'Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, where he shared a studio with Georges Braque. Pablo Picasso, who lived nearby, was shown Varda's work and said, "You are an academic painter. You are not a contemporary painter." The comment propelled Varda to drop out of school and turn to surrealism, Dada, and cubism, a style reflected in his collages. In 1945-1946, Varda taught a summer session at Black Mountain College in North Carolina. He created in midlife for many years in Northern California, where he lived in a boathouse in Sausalito.
