A confident mid-century abstract oil, circa 1960 — architectonic and post-cubist. A muted tonal ground of violet, mauve and grey-brown is crossed by a black linear armature, a large pink cruciform, acid-green accent bars and pale planar slabs. Emphatically hand-painted: real, scraped and reworked oil standing in relief on a canvas-textured panel — the reworked passages are the tell, since reproductions don't revise. Housed in what appears to be its original mid-century frame — a silvered-cream moulding with a natural linen liner, a desirable object in its own right. Signed lower left, illegibly, by an as-yet-unidentified hand. A serious, austere picture that reads far better in person than on screen. From a Marin County, California estate. One of a kind.
