Modernist Rocky Seascape in Watercolor on Paper A vibrant watercolor seascape by California artist Lucile Marie Johnston (1907-1994, American). Waves crash in among a group of brown rocks. The artist has brilliantly used negative space of the paper to create highlights in the water and sky. This piece was most likely created on-site as a plein air composition. Signed and dated "Johnston 81" at the bottom left. Presented in a grey mat with foam core backing. Mat size: 16"H x 20"W Paper size: 12"H x 16"W Born in Santa Rosa, California on May 26, 1907, Lucile Johnston settled in Glendale 1930-1939, later moving to Carmel and then Pacific Grove in Monterey County, California where she remained. she managed Marsh's Oriental Antiques Shop for many years. She exhibited widely, including the California Watercolor Society, (1933). She died in Monterey on Nov. 10, 1994.
