Signed lower left, 'James March Phillips' (American, 1913-1981) and painted circa 1965. Born in California, James March Phillips first studied in San Francisco at the Turner Art Academy under Alfred Owles and, subsequently, with Louis Rogers and J. Paget Fredricks. An avid outdoorsman, Phillips specialized in plein-air watercolor and gouache landscapes of the Monterey Peninsula, with his coastal paintings of Pebble Beach Golf Links and Cypress Point Club finding particular favor. Phillips exhibited widely and with success from the 1950's through the 1980's and his paintings are held in collections throughout the United States.
