After growing up in Fort Worth, Texas, and attending Texas Wesleyan College, he moved to Iowa to attend art school and study in the world-renowned printmaking studio of Mauricio Lasansky. While at Iowa majoring in painting and gaining valuable technical experience in printmaking, Willis formulated many of his approaches to color and composition. The subject matter of his etchings is rooted deep in the early values and background of the artist. As a young boy, the artist had the opportunity to work and live occasionally on a farm in central Texas where he learned to appreciate the ever-changing qualities of the landscape as it is subjected to temporal and climatic considerations."
