Nishii Shōdō "White Hawk On A Pine Tree", Late Meiji To Early Showa Large Scroll Painting

Chairish

$1,655

Stunning large antique Japanese scroll painting by Nishii Shōdō (1880–1941), a respected Kyoto artist known for his powerful depictions of birds and landscapes. The painting depicts a White Hawk on a Pine Tree above crashing waves. In Japanese culture, this is a very auspicious theme. The hawk symbolizes bravery and noble vision, while the pine and waves represent longevity and resilience against challenges. This is a beautiful example of traditional Japanese bird-and-flower painting (Kachō-ga). Signed by the artist: 'Shōdō' (松堂). Watercolor and ink on silk. Beautifully mounted on silk. Paper on back. Bone or bone-style roller ends. Based on the style and mounting, it likely dates back to the early 20th century (late Meiji to early Showa era). Very Good condition - minor age wear overall, minor staining and foxing, clean. This scroll can be trimmed and framed. Overall: 20.8"W x 1.05"D x 70.8"H Painting with silk border: 18.45"W x 48.5"H Painting without border: 13.5"W x 38.10"H
