Signed lower left, 'Ventosa' for Jose Ventosa Domenech (Spanish, 1897-1982) and painted circa 1950. A substantial oil painting showing a view of the island of Majorca with ancient olive groves and mountain cliffs bathed in warm evening light beneath clouded blue skies. A large and rare study of the island by this noted Spanish landscape painter. José Ventosa Doménech was born in Barcelona and subsequently studied at the San Jorge School of Fine Arts (1911). He later took a long study trip to Brussels where he studied Vanguard painting before returning to Barcelona to study under the Realist, Martí Alsina. In 1922, Ventosa met Eliseu Meifren and Domingo Soler in Ripoll. From 1924, Ventosa exhibited with success in Barcelona. A member of the "Nou ambient", Over the course of a long career, Ventosa exhibited both with the group and, with success, as a solo artist in Europe and South America including in Mexico ("Manifestation of Catalan Art", 1937), Palma de Mallorca (Galería Costa, 1947) and the Port d'Andratx.
