About The Artist Justin McCarthy (1891–1977) was a self-taught American painter from Pennsylvania, often associated with outsider art. After a breakdown in his youth and years in institutions, he returned home and painted prolifically while living modestly. His work features Hollywood stars, fashion models, athletes, biblical scenes, and everyday life, rendered in bold colors and expressive, sometimes cartoon-like or abstract styles. He painted on whatever materials he had—file folders, cardboard, Masonite—using pencil, watercolor, oils, and later acrylics. Discovered in the 1960s by collectors Sterling and Dorothy Strauser, McCarthy’s art gained recognition and was included in MoMA’s Seventeen Naïve Painters exhibition. Today, his works are in major museums including the Smithsonian and Philadelphia Museum of Art.
