In this portfolio, working with the artist Henri-Gabriel Ibels and the writer Georges Montorgueil, Lautrec created an ode to the café-concert. Montorgueil’s essay argued that café-concert are place for people from all walks of life to relax and communicate. This print represents Gaston Ouvrard, said simply Ouvrard a French comic songwriter and performer. Son of the artist Éloi Ouvrard, he became a star of the café-concert and popularized the comic style trooper invented by his father. Sign of the artist printed on lower right. Henri-Gabriel Ibels (Paris, November 1867 – February 1936) was a French illustrator, printmaker, and painter. He was a member of Les Nabis from 1889. Ibels drew his inspiration from life on the street, from cafés, etc. He collaborated with Toulouse-Lautrec and became involved in the avant-garde theater. He exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1891. He realized graphic design and advertising, lithographs and posters for theaters, cabarets, and book illustrations.
