Pair Of Antique Hand-Colored Scottish Steel Engravings By W.h. Bartlett & Thomas Allom, C. 1840

Chairish

$300

A beautiful matched pair of antique hand-colored 19th-century steel engravings depicting historic Scottish landmarks and scenes. These engravings were originally published around 1840 by the noted London publisher George Virtue and feature artwork by two of the Victorian era’s most celebrated topographical artists, W.H. Bartlett and Thomas Allom. The first engraving, “Wallace Tower – Ayr,” was drawn by W.H. Bartlett and engraved by R. Brandard, portraying the historic Wallace Tower surrounded by everyday life in Ayr, Scotland. Its companion, “The Canongate – During the Procession of His Majesty George IV (Edinburgh, August 22, 1822),” was drawn by Thomas Allom and engraved by J. Cousen, capturing one of Scotland’s most significant royal processions along Edinburgh’s historic Royal Mile. Both engravings retain their delicate hand-coloring, a hallmark of quality Victorian printmaking, and remain housed in matching gilt frames with coordinating mats, creating an elegant and cohesive presentation. Their architectural detail, historical significance, and period craftsmanship make them equally suited for traditional interiors, libraries, studies, or collections of British and Scottish historical prints. Details * Antique steel engravings * Circa 1838–1840 * Original hand-colored engravings * Published by George Virtue, London * Matching gilt frames * Sold as a pair * Ready to hang Condition Both engravings present beautifully with age-appropriate toning and minor wear consistent with their age. The matching vintage frames display light wear that complements their antique character. Overall, the pair is in very good vintage condition and displays exceptionally well.
