Pair of Art Deco Zebra Watercolor Gouaches by Shirrell Graves in Verde Frames A striking and highly decorative pair of Art Deco watercolor gouaches depicting zebras drinking at a jungle watering hole, executed by California artist Shirrell Watson Graves (1884–1954). Rendered with graceful stylization and strong linear rhythm, the compositions embody the fascination with exoticism, safari imagery, and streamlined natural forms that defined sophisticated interiors of the 1930s and 1940s. Each painting presents a zebra partially concealed by oversized tropical foliage, the dramatic black-and-white striping contrasted against softly modulated washes of celadon green, sand, taupe, and pale blue.
