Pair Of French Trophées De Chasse Mounted Hunt Plaques, Early 1900s

Chairish

$2,400

Sometimes referred to as “fruits of the hunt”, this pair of French trophées de chasse wall plaques from the early 1900s depicts two distinct collections of game. The mounted metal trophies have a golden bronze finish, allowing details to gain prominence when juxtaposed with the dark brown wooden backing boards with arched ends. Both trophies are presented beneath the profile of a dog, paired with a crinkled ribbon and foliate branches. Subtle differences can be spotted, such as the canines facing in opposite directions, and one of the branches features oak leaves, while the other portrays laurel leaves. Beneath the leftward-facing dog with oak leaves is a felled rabbit and bird. The dog looking right with laurel leaves is positioned above a grouping of three birds. Both trophies project well from the backing boards, allowing nuances such as musculature and individual feathers to be viewed. During the 19th century, plaques such as these would have been displayed in French hunting lodges, adding colorful décor to the wall.
