This fabulous French illustration is from the famed Maxim's restaurant in Paris. It is actually a jacket for a menu that is inside, behind the jacket that is floating inside the framing. I have only been able to find the image in my research, without the names written below of each character. Dimensions are of framed piece. Georges Goursat, aka SEM, who was born in Périgueux in 1863, and died in Paris in 1934, was one of the most characteristic painters of the Belle Epoque. Maxim’s restaurant was one of the favourite places of this fierce cartoonist, who knew better than anyone how to reveal the personality and vanities of the great and the good, in a few pencil lines. His work includes countless drawings, sketched from life at Maxim’s, where Sem found an endless source of inspiration in the regular customers.
