Modern Artisans

$25

'St John the Apostle' Retablo Plaque Long a popular folk-art form in colonial Spanish and Mexican culture, retablos are devotional paintings depicting divine icons and symbols, particularly Catholic patron saints. Chosen as representations and guardians of particular occupations and life situations, patron saints are often turned to in times of need or to express gratitude for a blessing. Displayed in homes to honor the saint or given as gifts of fortune and inspiration, retablos reflect a beloved historical tradition and cultural artistry. Made by hand in New Mexico, this retablo plaque honors St John the Apostle, regarded as the patron saint of caregivers and writers. An original design by the artist, her art print is decoupaged upon carved pine wood in traditional form. The reverse side includes a hole for hanging and a story of the saint. Also known as John the Evangelist, John was one of the 12 apostles of Jesus and often referred to as the Beloved Disciple. He was the only apostle that remained at the foot of the cross during the crucifixion, where Jesus entrusted John with the care of his mother, Mary. John cared for Mary until her death. John is also credited with writing the Gospel of John and likely additional Biblical contributions that continue to influence to this day. He remains a beloved symbol of love and loyalty. St John is often depicted alongside an eagle, a representation of divine messages and spiritual strength.
