Paul Klee (1879-1940) Original Vintage Lithograph Publisher: Meriden Gravure Co, 1947 "Komiker" 12" x 9" Overview: This is a wonderful Vintage Original lithograph by Paul Klee (1879-1940) after his original etching, Komiker (Comedian). This is one of several etchings Klee made that refer to ancient Greek comedies; in this example, both mask and face are significantly deformed. The artist said, "This is my most personal work up to now...Its expression flowed from my deepest soul." Klee described the subject of this print as "a grotesque mask on a grave and moral head...The mask represents art, behind it hides man." He considered the print's etched lines to be "roads to the analysis of the work of art." This lithograph comes from the second edition of the Prints of Paul Klee was printed in the summer of 1947, in an edition of two thousand copies, by the Meriden Gravure Company, Meriden, Connecticut, and The Golden Eagle Press, Mount Vernon, New York. The eight color plates were reproduced in stencil by Esther Gentle, New York. Original date of 1904, the title, and the signature is printed in the plate. The title is printed on the back.
