Piranesi, Views Of Rome: Egyptian Obelisk, Etching, Framed

Chairish

$1,452

Etching belonging to the Vedute di Roma made by Giovanni Battista Piranesi in 1759. (L. Ficacci, Piranesi, The Complete Etching, Taschen, p. 703, no. 902). It depicts the Piazza San Giovanni Laterano in Rome with the Obelisk erected by Pope Sixtus V. In some places of the View are marked numbers that find their explanation in the caption at the bottom of the print. At the bottom right we find the signature "Piranesi Architetto fec." and the number "12." is indicated. At the bottom left we find "At the author's" with the address following. At the top is marked the number "696" which is not present in the caption. The print is framed in simple walnut frame behind glass. The measurements shown in the card are the outside dimensions of the frame. The inside dimensions, and thus of the visible part of the imprinted paper, are 81.5/59 cm. The dimensions of the imprinted surface are 55/40 cm. The paper shows light yellowing that in some parts is more evident. The frame shows light signs of wear (surface scratches of the varnish). This piece has an attribution mark, I am sure that it is completely authentic and take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising from misattribution
