A vibrant Modernist watercolor study showing a view of Monterey's Point Lobos beach. Initialed lower right, 'CH' for Charles Hess (American, 1921-1998) and dated 1993; additionally titled, lower left, 'Point Lobos #1'. This listed California artist exhibited with success including at the California Watercolor Society (1942-46), Art Institute of Chicago (1944) and the Corcoran Gallery of Art (1957, 1959). Charles Hess studied at the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles in 1940 with Millard Sheets and Rico Lebrun. He completed graduate work in art at UC Berkeley in 1955 and subsequently taught at the Pasadena Art Institute. He was also appointed assistant professor at several respected universities on the East Coast.
