Portrait Of A Mid 19th-Century Young American Gentleman

Chairish

$9,500

On offer is a portrait of a dapper young man holding a hat who is believed to be Philip Edward Tabb (1830–1901). This painting is a classic example of mid-19th-century American portraiture. The subject's clothing—a high-collared white shirt, black cravat, and dark coat—is consistent with the attire of the 1850s, around the time of his marriage to Katherine "Kate" Valentine Morris on November 21, 1854. It was a common custom at the time for couples to commission "wedding portraits". This one uses an oval format, which was likewise highly fashionable for formal family portraits during the Victorian era. Tabb was a descendant of one of colonial Virginia's most prominent families. The identification is indicated by the handwritten note on the reverse, which also details his marriage to Katherine Valentine Morris of New York and his connection to the Whitemarsh estate in Gloucester County, Virginia. Whitemarsh was a significant landmark. Philip Tabb was born there on August 27, 1830 and the estate remained in the Tabb family for generations. The Tabbs were "flour merchants" and successful sea captains who amassed great wealth, particularly during the War of 1812, allowing them to maintain grand estates like Whitemarsh, Waverly, and Toddsbury. The back of the painting features a note by K.L. Tyler (photo #9) identifying Philip as their "mother's father," which helps trace the painting's descent through the family. This K.L. Tyler is possibly Lyon Gardiner Tyler (or a close relative), a noted Virginia historian and son of President John Tyler, whose family intermarried with the Tabbs. Even lacking a connection to Virginia’s history, having this young man on the wall would make a very appealing presence in one’s home. Signature/Maker’s mark: Nonexistent. Unframed dimensions: 25”w x 33”h.
