A vivid and striking example of Art Deco painting, this depiction of St. Sebastian in tones of gold and pink-papaya shows the figure with a rich, brown complexion, wounded with four arrows, his head sharply lowered as he approaches his martyrdom. The colors are bold and the figure and setting are stylized in the best French manner. The painter was Jean Remy, who is otherwise known for cityscapes with none of the color or verve we see here, so this painting is very special in his oeuvre. The painting is signed in the lower left hand corner, and the reverse shows an old label from the frame maker.
