She attended Stanford University, where she earned her BA in Art, and then went on to study at the Sorbonne in Paris. She later moved to East Palo Alto with her husband and children, where she studied with Richard Bowman. In 1969, she earned her teaching credential in Art from Cal State Hayward. In 1974, she won second prize for watercolors in the Foster City Art League Annual Show and first prize for florals at the San Mateo County Fair. This prize included a one year scholarship to the San Francisco Academy of Art, which she attended immediately after winning. Pagels passed away in 2010, a few weeks before her 80th birthday.
