Purvis Young Painting

Chairish

$3,500

Original untitled painting on wood with frame signed by Purvis Young (1943-2010). He was a self-taught American artist from Miami's Overtown neighborhood adjacent to downtown. Young's style captured a unique sense of urgency through brushy, dreamlike paintings that focus on the lives and histories of Black Americans. Young painted on whatever surfaces were available such as discarded scraps of wood, metal, cardboard and other trash on the streets of Miami. In totality, Young's work is viewed as an expression of both, his optimism for the future and his critique of social injustice suffered by people in his community. Purvis Young's work is now part of the collectioins of American Folk Museum, The Rubell Family Collection, The Bass in Miami, the High Museum of Art in Atlanta and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C., among many others.
