Here is an amazing original, hand colored, steel engraving of the delightfully shaggy Shetland pony or Shetland 'Poney', as it is titled on the print. The Sheltie shown is a small, hardy breed of pony in the wilds of the Shetland Islands of Scotland. This is an illustration from The Naturalist’s Library: Mammalia Vol. XII – Horses (1841), edited by Sir William Jardine and illustrated by Charles Hamilton Smith. This antique print captures both the charm and grit of the Shetland breed: stoic, windblown, and incredibly saucy while plotting your downfall. Known for its strength, dense coat, and ability to thrive in harsh climates. It has been present on the islands since at least the Bronze Age. Historically, Shetland ponies were used for farm work, carrying peat and seaweed, and later as pit ponies in coal mines in Britain and the United States. Today they are used for driving and children's riding ponies. A few still perform traditional work on the island. All had yellowed with age. It will be included. Though affixed to a mat that shows minor spotting, the etching itself is in amazingly good condition.
