Rare Antique 19th. Century Edo Japanese Lake And Landscape Signed 'Relief' Paintings On Board, Lacquer Frames, A Pair

Chairish

$1,370

Very rare and exquisitely executed pair of original Japanese high relief paintings. The first we have seen in this style. When seen in person, they will not disappoint. Such pieces often use monochrome images of trees and rocks to draw the viewers eye to the artists inner landscape scenes. One portrays a beautiful traditional Japanese scene on the shore of a mountain stream, the large trees in the foreground rendered in high relief, and in the distance on a small bridge, an old, bent over man crosses a cascading river, walking-stick in hand. In the foreground a house is nestled amongst the gnarled pines with two people on the deck, another lady in a Kimono walking toward the house. The other portrays what could be the other side of the lake, Japanese fishing boats and smaller houses in the distance. Gnarly pines over the look the water front scene. Presented in the original hand decorated lacquered wood frames with barely discernable cherry blossom decorations typical of the Edo period. Each signed in gold and stamped with a red 'chop' on the left and right as shown. Early 19th Century. Edo period. Condition is good for age. Some loss to relief elements and some restoration/overpainting in the sky on the right painting above the blue line as indicated. Also, scattered loss to finish on original lacquered wooden frames. Listed by East2West Furniture, Florida. Each: 15 1/2" x 21" x 1/2" overall with frame. The boards are 12" x 17" each. 7 pounds..
