A rare to market early 19th Century lithograph by New York publishing and printing house Nicholas Birdsall Brower. The wonderfully moody scene depicts an allegorical interior family scene. It focuses on a child, man, and woman around a bistro table enjoying grapes. The color palette is brown and blue.. And though the paper is officially rectangular the inner composition is arched and oval, adding to its depth and complexity. It sort of depicts a ceramic platter; and reminds us a little of Picasso's ceramic plates and platters. It has a stage like presentation as if in a Shakespeare play. These kinds of prints were common in the U.S. during the expansion of lithography. They drew from European genre scenes but adapted into accessible American domestic or moral/allegorical themes. And though not a high-end fine art piece it appeals to collectors of American folk/ephemera, Victorian prints, or regional New York history. Please note that the back states the original label is underneath the brown paper. We did not uncover it to verify.
