He is known for Watercolor landscape-fishing, illustration, fine art photography. Richard Schlecht discovered his love for art early in life, and has been fervently following his passion, particularly in watercolor, ever since. His work took a major leap in the 1980s when he took the first of many extended visits to Italy to paint the villas and countryside landscapes of Tuscany and Umbria. He is able to create beautiful scenes using a range of subtle highlights to deep shadows not often found in most watercolor artists oeuvre. Richard Schlecht graduated with a degree in Journalism, but soon after he launched a long career in illustration while in the Army. In 1967, he began a thirty-year relationship as a freelance illustrator for National Geographic. He has also created work for Time-Life books, the National Park Service, and the U.S. Postal Service.
