Signed Portrait Of A Young Lady - Eduard Ender, 19th Century

Chairish

$1,780

An exceptionally refined watercolor portrait of a young lady by the distinguished Austrian painter Eduard Ender, one of the notable figures of the Viennese art scene of the 19th century. Ender was the brother of the renowned watercolorist Thomas Ender and worked between Vienna, Rome, and London, producing portraits and historical subjects for aristocratic and bourgeois patrons. The work is signed “E. Ender” and displays all the characteristics of the artist’s mature portrait style: precise drawing, delicate modeling of the face, and a highly sensitive treatment of light and textiles. The young woman, dressed in white, is depicted with a calm, slightly introspective expression, creating an intimate and dignified atmosphere. The restrained and harmonious color palette, with subtle tonal transitions, emphasizes the elegance of the figure and the fineness of the garment. The watercolor is presented in its original richly ornamented oval bronze frame from the second half of the 19th century, which significantly enhances the historical integrity and aesthetic presence of the work. The reverse shows an old and authentic frame construction consistent with the period of creation. Provenance: Formerly in a European private collection; acquired 1920s on the Vienna antiques market (Austria). The object has been in Europe for several decades.
