Sumi-e Brushes and Bowl - Still Life by Elizabeth Harrington Vibrant still life of Sumi-e Brushes in vase and rinsing bowl by Elizabeth Mae Harrington, "Betty" (American, 1919-1990). A small vase holds several sumi-e brushes, next to a small red bowl. A small piece of blotter cloth is in front of the bowl. Signed "Elizabeth Harrington" in the lower right corner. Presented in a wood frame with a double mat of pink and tan. Image size: 10.5"H x 9"W Frame size: 19.5"H x 16.5"W Elizabeth "Betty" Harrington (American, 1919-1990) was born in San Diego, California in 1919. She studied at the University of California and the California School of Arts and Crafts. She also studied privately with Richard Yip and John Cunningham at the Carmel Art Institute. In 1942 she joined the Women's Army Corp, serving in the United States and England. After the war she moved to the Monterey Peninsula. In 1952 she returned to active duty during the Korean War. Afterwards she moved back to Carmel where she settled. At that time, she established a studio and gallery at the old Pine Inn in Carmel. She was a regular award winner at the Monterey County Fair and other venues on the Peninsula. She established her own gallery (Harrington-Brown Gallery in Carmel) and was a long time member of the Carmel Art Association. Harrington died in Carmel in 1990.
